HistoryThe Mayan city of Tulum flourished during the 14th century and was an important point of trade for the Maya civilization. It was still inhabited when the conquerors arrived to this area of Mexico. When the Spanish arrived the spectacle they found was beyond anything they could have imagine, buildings painted white, red and blue contrasting with the aquamarine blues of the Caribbean and the greens of the jungle. The site was later abandoned and it was until the 20th century that excavations started and scientist started to discover it, restore it and study its significance. Nowadays the National Institute of Anthropology and History continues to preserve and study this important Mayan archaeological site. In recent times Tulum town is growing fast, but it still is a quiet little village with just a few roads, shops, hostels and restaurant where you can find economical accommodations. The beach zone is flourishing with beautiful quaint hotels and exclusive chic accommodations and restaurants but still preserving the pristine nature of this wonderful place.
