History

Mayan navigators, colonizers, pirates and nature lovers have landed in this beautiful island, looking for shelter and a simpler life.
The Maya were the first to discover this Caribbean island, turning it into the sanctuary of Ixchel, Mayan goddess of the moon, fertility and in general of the feminine forces of nature.

At the arrival of Spaniards in 1517, the conqueror Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba found little statues of women and the Mayan Temple of the goddess Ixchel at Punta Sur, which gave rise to the island seductive name of Isla Mujeres (Island of Women).

Pirate stories are the delight of islanders, who enjoy telling the adventures of those reckless sea dogs that once docked in Isla Mujeres beautiful beaches. Among them, the famous Capitan Lafitte and the Mundaca pirate, whose hacienda can still be visited, next to Garrafon Park.

Isla Mujeres’ municipality was established in 1975. Nowadays, Isla Mujeres offers to its visitors the best of two worlds: one of pure Mexican taste, hammocks, white sand beaches, palapas and fishermen, in combination with excellent services and first level infrastructure.
